Curriculum & Instruction

Washington County School district believes that student curriculum is vital
in supporting learning success. Curriculum is adopted in the district by
following Washington County School District procedures.

All staff are provided high quality professional learning opportunities
throughout the year. Teachers meet weekly to collaborate, review data, and
prepare lessons. The district is staffed with Instructional Facilitators to help
support additional professional learning and coaching specific to student and
teacher needs.

Students in K-5 use the Wonders reading series by McGraw Hill, students in
6-8 use the Literature series by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, and students in 9-
12 use teacher created lessons to aid in learning the Georgia Standards of
Excellence in Reading and English Language Arts (ELA). Students K-12 use the
Math Learning Plans by GADOE to aid in learning the Georgia Standards of
Excellence in Mathematics. Teacher made units are used to support
instruction of the standards in Science, Social Studies, and extra-curricular
courses. In K-8, students are rotated through elective courses that allow them
the opportunity to develop career interests. High school students have the
opportunity to take elective courses that align to personal interests and/or
that lead to pathway completion.

Professional
Learning

Professional Learning is the means by which teachers,
administrators, and other staff acquire, enhance, and refine
the knowledge, skills, practices, and dispositions necessary to
create and support high levels of learning for all students.

  • Professional learning, now more than ever, is a critical piece
in the success of a school system. Through proven methods
and collaboration we strive relentlessly to give the students
of Washington County the best possible education.
  • Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) is a framework
    designed to provide a
    proactive and preventative
approach to addressing the academic, behavioral, and
social-emotional needs of all students. It involves a tiered
system of support, where students receive increasing
levels of intervention based on their needs. This
approach aims to identify struggling students early,
provide targeted support, and prevent academic and
behavioral issues from escalating. MTSS incorporates
    data-driven decision-making, high-quality instruction, and
positive behavioral interventions to ensure that all
students have the opportunity to succeed. Georgia's
MTSS includes schoolwide implementation that focuses
on the “what and how of instruction” and the provision of
services and supports to students that meet their unique,
    whole child needs.
